SAAB AND GM PROVE A GOOD MATCH

COME FEB. 13, THERE WILL be joy in Stockholm--and in Detroit. Sweden's Saab Automobile is expected to announce its first full-year profit since 1988, thanks in large part to help from General Motors, which in 1990 paid $600 million for 50% of the company. Saab has kept its distinctive styling intact, but its new 900 model shares mechanical guts with the Opel Calibra sold by GM's German subsidiary. Strong demand for the 900 helped boost Saab's worldwide sales 22% last year, to 89,000 cars--but without GM's parts bin to dip into, it likely couldn't have afforded the new model.EDITED BY KEITH H.
