MAKING AMENDS AT DENNY'S

HALF A YEAR AFTER PAYING $46 million to settle class-action claims of racial discrimination, Denny's has made its first big move toward increasing the number of African-American franchisees. Black-owned NDI signed a deal on Nov. 8 to own and operate up to 47 Denny's restaurants in the Northeast. The move is a major turnaround for the Flagstar unit, which historically has had almost no black-owned Denny's franchises. Flagstar says it wants 53 minority-owned Denny's by 1997, a pledge that grew out of highly publicized discrimination charges brought by the NAACP and in two class actions.EDITED BY KEITH H.
