U.S.-CHINA ACTION

Following the showdown over China's most-favored-nation trading status, the U.S. is moving swiftly to arrange high-level talks with the Chinese. In the military realm, the deputy chief of the Chinese army's general staff will visit the Pentagon in early August to discuss defense conversion and other matters. In turn, Defense Secretary William Perry may go to Beijing in the fall. Visits by Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown, drug czar Lee Brown, and others are planned. The Chinese hope the exchanges will set the stage for a summit between Clinton and Premier Jiang Zemin.
