REDESIGNING DOLLARS TO GIVE FORGERS FITS

To combat the troubling increase in counterfeit U.S. bills, Treasury officials told members of the House Banking Committee at a July 13 hearing that Treasury will be testing a series of new features. Among the ploys: moving portraits of George Washington and his peers off center and using watermarks and tricky interactive patterns that can't be reproduced well--even with today's sophisticated copiers. The radical redesign should be completed sometime in 1995, with new $100 bills--those most often counterfeited--coming off the presses the following year.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
