HALLMARK GETS A `MAYBE' OR TWO

Hallmark Cards sent out invitations months ago. Now, a handful of potential buyers are responding to its offer to sell its Crown Media cable subsidiary. Charter Communications, a St. Louis-based cable operator led by former Crown managers, has told Hallmark it is interested in at least part of the operation. And sources close to the bargaining say others are mulling bids for the unit, which has 890,000 subscribers in 15 states. It might be tough, though, for Hallmark to recoup the nearly $1 billion it paid in 1991.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
