A U.S. CHIPMAKER'S VIDEO-GAME VICTORY

Up to now, your kid's mind-numbing video-game players have come from a largely Japanese cast. But a U.S. manufacturer is getting in on the fun: Sony announced June 15 that LSI Logic of Milpitas, Calif., will supply the central chip for Sony's forthcoming PlayStation. Sony said it picked LSI Logic because of the company's ability to consolidate many functions onto one densely packed chip: LSI Logic claims that its chip handles 200 million instructions per second, better than Intel's Pentium.
