COMMENTARY

With fixed-income investors finally starting to accept the idea that the

economy is slowing, bond prices picked up and interest rates dropped. But that

didn't impress equity investors. U.S. stocks drifted down in quiet trading. The

big action was overseas. Tokyo stocks continued to rally, making another new

high for the year. British equities climbed 3.6% for the week, and the French

market, 3.4%. The Italian, Swiss, and Dutch stock markets logged gains in

excess of 2% as well.
