INTEL AND HP CHIP IN ON DESIGN

Just as IBM's PowerPC chip starts to threaten Intel's death grip on the microprocessor business, Intel has struck back in a big way. On June 8, the maker of chips that run most personal computers said it would work with Hewlett-Packard in designing a new generation of silicon brains. The two plan to merge their chips into a design that can run everything from PCs to large computers. They say the chips will outrun rivals' yet still work with software written for both HP's speedy RISC chips and Intel's Pentium. The chips won't be out until at least decade's end.EDITED BY KEITH H.
