Investment Figures of the Week

U.S. stocks were little changed in lackluster trading this week. Ditto for

Treasury bonds and corporates. The big news was on the commodity front, where a

jump in corn and soybean prices pushed the Commodity Research Bureau index

sharply higher. This triggered inflation fears and kept investors on the

sidelines, despite signs that the economy was slowing down. The story was quite

different in Tokyo, with the Nikkei rising neatly to set a 1994 high.
