TRIBUNE'S INSIDER ON THE INSIDE TRACK

The management horse race for the top spot at Tribune, the fast-expanding media giant, appears to be resolved. John Madigan, currently executive vice-president overseeing the group's newspaper operations, has been tapped as president and chief operating officer. He becomes odds-on favorite to succeed Chairman and CEO Charles Brumback, who's expected to step down in a year. Insiders say the 57-year-old Madigan narrowly beat out the other leading contender, Executive Vice-President James Dowdle, after the board looked at a host of candidates, including outsiders.EDITED BY KEITH H.
