Why Does The Pentagon Need Such A Big Purse?

WHY DOES THE PENTAGON NEED SUCH A BIG PURSE?

The Pentagon budget "is riddled with deception," as you say ("The budget: Clear goals, deceptive means," Top of the News, Feb. 21), but not for the $30 billion shortfall that you talk about.

Rather, nobody has yet explained why we should blow $280 billion a year on the military when the next 10 biggest defense budgets in the world put together are only $250 billion, including $40 billion for Russia. What do we propose to do with all that? Is anything being planned that we don't know about, or is that another one of those "entitlements" you criticize?
