BORDEN'S SWINGING BACK DOOR

The toughest job at beleaguered Borden: switchboard operator. Since Ervin Shames arrived last summer as president, longtime Borden employees have been departing at a blinding pace--replaced in many instances with Shames loyalists from his days as head of General Foods USA and Kraft USA. Former CEO Anthony D'Amato left in December. And Shames, now CEO, has brought in newcomers to head Borden's pasta, dairy, international, and Canadian operations. On Feb. 14, Chief Financial Officer Lawrence Doza took early retirement. General Counsel Walter Kocher has resigned, and George Waydo, longtime head of Borden's disastrous snack operation, is said to be negotiating a severance package.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
