BIG BLUE TURNS ITS BACK ON PENTIUM

If you want to manufacture your own microprocessors, why pay another company for the rights to make its chip? You don't, IBM decided. On Jan. 31, Big Blue said it will pass on manufacturing rights to Intel's Pentium, though it will boost production of the Intel 486 chip it already has a license to make. Instead, Big Blue will try to establish its PowerPC microprocessor--jointly developed with Motorola and Apple Computer.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
