Investment Figures of the Week

U.S. stocks turned in a mixed performance this week. The Dow Jones industrials

hit new highs once again. But the broader-based S&P 500 index, hampered by

earnings disappointments in some big high-tech stocks, such as Intel, was

unable to follow suit. Interest rates rose in response to a sharp rise in

commodity prices--especially oil--and talk that the Federal Reserve was about

to tighten. East Asian equity markets rebounded from recent profit-taking,

while shares in London posted a new record.
