Is there a chance the shift to light trucks will be reversed in coming years? Barring a sharp rise in real gasoline prices, which they deem unlikely, economists at DRI/McGraw-Hill don't think so. They note that demographic trends strongly support the shift to big family-oriented vehicles such as minivans, sport utilities, and large sedans.

The ranks of 35- to 54-year-olds will grow by 13 million between 1992 and 2000, while the 25- to 35-year-old crowd will decline by 6 million. Consumers who are 35 to 44 are twice as likely to buy a larger vehicle as those 25 to 34, and those between 45 and 54 are six times as likely.GENE KORETZ
