AN X-RATING FOR MORTAL COMBAT?

Congress' war on video violence may be extending to video games. On Dec. 1, Senators Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.) and Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) announced that they plan to introduce a bill to force gamemakers to notify parents if a game is excessively violent. The legislation would ask the industry to set up an independent board to rate games for violence, much as movies are currently rated. If business doesn't agree on such a system within a year of the bill's passage, the federal government will step in. At least one gamemaker, Sega Enterprises, already rates its own games.EDITED BY THANE PETERSON
