Investment Figures of the Week

Stocks retreated from their recent highs as interest rates edged up. While the

U.S. recovery is on track and that's a big plus for corporate profits, it's

giving bond investors the jitters. The rate on 30-year Treasuries hit 6.39% on

Nov. 22, the highest since August, before backing off. If the threat to U.S.

stocks is fast economic growth, the opposite is the case in Japan. The

weakening economy there has sent the Nikkei tumbling--down 4% for the week and

more than 15% since early October.
