Unionization Mc Jitters

In Business This Week

McDonald's is feeling heat--and it's not just from fast-food rivals. The Toronto local of the Service Employees International Union has asked the Ontario Labor Relations Board to certify a union for 102 employees of a local McDonald's franchise. The franchisee is fighting the bid. If SEIU prevails, the restaurant would become only the third unionized fast-food outlet north of the border--and the first McDonald's. That wouldn't make a union drive at American restaurants any likelier, though: U.S. labor law makes it considerably more difficult to organize such workers.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
