RUSSIA-TURKEY OIL SPAT
Angered at being cut out of potentially lucrative fees from oil export pipelines from the former Soviet republics, Turkey is threatening to curtail oil shipping through the Bosporus. The Turks say they are concerned about shipping congestion and environmental damage in the bottleneck between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. But they also want to force international oil companies, including Chevron and Amoco, to send some oil from their huge upcoming projects in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan through a proposed pipeline that would pass through Turkey.
