THE REFRIGERATOR RACE: INNOVATION WORTH REPEATING

I found "The great refrigerator race" (Design, July 5) especially interesting. The Super Efficient Refrigerator Program contest, launched by a group of utilities, not only spurred contestants to explore important technologies and examine their product-development processes but also called for determination, teamwork, and clever maneuvering.

The contest is an innovative idea and encourages healthy competition in the industry. In light of the inevitable global competition ahead of us, the U.S. could use more such ideas to reinvigorate its manufacturing industries and achieve technological leadership.
