STATIC BETWEEN MURDOCH AND THE FCC

Will Rupert Murdoch's bid to buy the New York Post go up in smoke? The Federal Communications Commission to Murdoch: Maybe. The media baron owns New York's WNYW-TV, so he needs the FCC to waive a rule that prevents one person from owning a TV station and a newspaper in the same market. Until recently, the waiver seemed a sure thing. But opposition is growing in New York political circles and on Capitol Hill. Murdoch says if he doesn't get an FCC ruling by June 1, he'll withdraw his bid. FCC Chairman James Quello, surprised by the criticism, isn't sure the FCC will meet Murdoch's deadline. "I wouldn't say it will be granted automatically at all," he says. EDITED BY JULIE TILSNER
