MICROSOFT KEEPS `EM COMING

The code name of yet another new, beyond-PC operating system from Microsoft (page 8444) is Arador--a reference to J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Arador aims to control the basic functions of a new generation of digital fax machines, telephones, laser printers, and copiers that will be equipped with microchips, memory, disk drives, and display screens. Microsoft plans to announce the new software on June 9 with a group of leading equipment makers, including some Japanese electronic giants.EDITED BY JULIE TILSNER
