CYPRESS: IF YOU CAN'T BEAT `EM, SELL OUT

A few years ago, T.J. Rodgers, CEO of Cypress Semiconductor, thought he could build a microprocessor that would take on Intel. Today, he concedes that it's a tougher business than he thought. On May 12, Cypress announced plans to sell its Ross Technology subsidiary to Fujitsu for $23 million. The subsidiary lost $3 million before taxes in the first quarter. Rodgers, who has claimed that his company could best any Japanese competitor, says he feels no remorse at selling out to a Japanese rival. "My patriotism does not exclude free-market transactions," he says.EDITED BY JULIE TILSNER
