DRIVERS GIVE DETROIT BETTER MARKS

Japanese autos still top the quality charts, but Detroit is closing the gap, according to a recent survey by researcher J. D. Power & Associates. Acura took No. 1, Nissan and Toyota tied for second, and Honda came in third in the study of customer satisfaction with 1989 model cars.

Three General Motors nameplates also finished in the top 10: Buick and Cadillac tied for fourth, and Oldsmobile was 10th. Overall, domestic carmakers closely matched the industry average while improving their score by 10% from last year's survey, compared with just a 5% increase for Asian makes.EDITED BY HARRIS COLLINGWOOD
