International Outlook: Global Wrapup

CHINA

Mao Tse-tung may be dead and gone, but the father of Chinese communism is hot among hip Chinese consumers. At markets throughout the Chinese capital, sacred relics from the Cultural Revolution, including Mao's Little Red Books, ceramic Mao pins, and colorful Mao statues and plates are on sale. A Cultural Revolution alarm clock with a Red Guard brandishing a Little Red Book on the second hand goes for $9. You can also find newer items such as cigarette lighters that beep The East Is Red, one of Mao's favorite anthems. Millions of Chinese have already snapped up cassettes featuring disco versions of Mao's revolutionary songs.Edited by Stanley Reed
