MOST AMERICANS STILL SEE A BRIGHTER, RICHER FUTURE

The American dream is alive and well despite recent rough economic weather, reports the Conference Board. Its latest survey of 5,000 households across the nation reveals that nearly 65% of respondents say their present standard of living is higher than those of their parents during the last years they were living at home, over two-thirds think their opportunities are greater, and 55% think their children will enjoy higher living standards than themselves.

Even respondents under 35 were upbeat. About 75% report living standards higher than or similar to those of their parents, and 60% of men and 73% of women think their opportunities are greater. Some 53% of those under 35 expect their kids to do even better. Only 15% worry that they will fare worse.Gene Koretz
