The Right Prostate Treatment

THE RIGHT PROSTATE TREATMENT

I found the article ("Prostate cancer: How to thwart a killer," Personal Business, Mar. 16) misleading because:

-- The use of radioactive implants is not standard therapy, has never been shown to be equivalent to external beam irradiation, and is not to be routinely recommended (in my view).

-- Reduction of male-hormone production through orchectomy or new medical treatments results in reduction in pain and decrease in symptoms in most men. DES is a poor alternative. While effective, it is toxic and is not often used. There are new and important drugs: Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogs, and antiandrogens.
