ORDERING FROM A REAL ESTATE AGENT'S MENU
As a Cleveland area Realtor, I believe "The lawsuit that could cut home prices" (Finance, Jan. 20) is misleading in its simplification. Even if nonmember companies are allowed access to the computerized Multiple Listing Service, it does not follow that commissions will necessarily be reduced. They are negotiated between sellers and brokers, not dictated by local boards of Realtors. In fact, that would be construed in Ohio as price-fixing and, as such, illegal. What will save sellers money in marketing properties is the trend in some places for brokers to offer services a la carte. Sellers who don't want to take advantage of all the agent's services will be able to choose among those offered.
