`DON'T GET UP, JUST BUY'
Great news for couch potatoes. TV Answer of Reston, Va., planned to announce on Feb. 27 that computer giant Hewlett-Packard will produce and market hardware that will allow consumers to shop and bank using a television remote-control device.
HP says it will make a minimum of 1.5 million electronic boxes within a year afterthe Federal Communications Commission grants licenses to local interactive-TV operators. HP also plans to market the VCR-sized devices at a retail price below $700. TV Answer, which develops and tests interactive-TV technology, predicts that homeowners could see a commercial interactive-TV system by early 1993.EDITED BY HARRIS COLLINGWOOD
