HEADHUNTERS SPY SIGNS OF LIFE IN THE NORTHEAST

Suddenly, there seems to be a bit more room in some executive suites. According to the Association of Executive Search Consultants (aesc), executive searches in the Northeast rose by 15% in the fourth quarter and were up 10% from a year earlier. While other regions posted little or no growth, aesc President Glenn Van Doren notes that the Northeast was not only the first and hardest-hit victim of the recession but is the headquarters site of many of the nation's largest banks and corporations.

The recent upturn in the Northeast, says Van Doren, is the first since the summer of 1990, and "it makes us cautiously optimistic that the long-awaited economic turnaround has begun."GENE KORETZ
