WASHINGTON OUTLOOK: Capital Wrapup

THE SENATE

Colorado could provide a ray of hope to otherwise bleak Republican Senate prospects. Although State Senator Terry Considine is hobbled by a riding accident, he holds a commanding lead over GOP rivals and is threatening freshman Democratic Senator Timothy E. Wirth. A Denver Post poll shows Wirth leading Considine by only a 49-32 margin, a poor showing for an incumbent. Republicans also see an opening in Georgia, where first-term Democrat Wyche Fowler Jr. is paying for his early opposition to the Persian Gulf War. Former Peace Corps Director Paul Coverdell is the leading challenger.EDITED BY STEPHEN H. WILDSTROM
