Computerized matchups of medicare, Social Security, and tax records could end up saving the government $1 billion. The Health Care Financing Administration has asked 800,000 employers to provide details on the health coverage of specific individuals to find out if their claims were mistakenly paid by the government. For workers over age 65, medicare pays only for those medical expenses not covered by employer-provided insurance. An HCFA study of the computer-generated data, however, found that medicare shelled out hundreds of millions of dollars that should have been covered by private insurers.
