COMMENTARY

The economic news was awful--rising unemployment and sagging auto sales. The

financial markets looked to the Federal Reserve to ease monetary policy some

more--but the central bank failed to do so. Stocks tumbled, with the Dow

dropping 45 points on Apr. 9. Bonds were creamed, too, that day. For the week,

small-cap stocks displayed resilience. The Russell 2000 gave up 0.4%--only

one-fifth the loss of the Dow. With trading volume high, brokerage stocks

continued to shine.
