Recently we had a lengthy power outage in our office over the weekend. I went to the office to check on things and found a situation we had never even considered: Half the power in the building was back on, but the other half was still out. Luckily, our servers were back up. But even though the temperature controls were in the same room, they were wired to a part of the building that did not yet have power.
As the temperature in the server room continued to rise, we quickly grabbed all the fans we could and began manually cooling the room until the power went back on. Luckily, we were able to resolve the situation before it became a serious problem, but it forced us to take a better look at all aspects of our business to see where other potential issues could arise.
Here are a few disaster-preparedness suggestions that we recommend to our clients, as well as implement at our own office:
1. Plan ahead. Being aware of what might potentially happen in your area can be the deciding factor as to whether its effects are minor or catastrophic. While many things are out of your control, many are manageable if you plan for them and all available precautions are put into place.
2. Rely on experts. You may think you know the ins and outs of your office or facility, but there are a number of things (such as our power situation) that you may never think of.
3. Practice. While it may seem childish to role-play different scenarios, it will inevitably save lives if there is a catastrophic situation. Going through the motions not only educates your staff on the proper procedures, but it will also make them more comfortable and able to handle situations with ease.
In the end, we can’t control everything. But we can control how we respond and manage situations. Proper planning and the assurance that you have the necessary safeguards in place will allow for the best possible outcome in case of a disaster.
