As health care can be an expensive part of an employee’s benefits package, this can present a challenge to small business owners struggling to hold down expenses in an effort to stay in business. Incorporating proactive health programs to educate employees and promote a healthy lifestyle can help to reduce overall health risks for employees and decrease the number of health insurance claims hitting the business. Here are a few things that you can do to improve the health of your employees:
1. Conduct an overall wellness assessment. This will inform you of the primary health risks affecting your particular organization. As a result, proactive programs and seminars can be developed focusing on these specific health risks, featuring guest speakers such as dietitians, physicians, nurses, or fitness instructors.
2. You are what you eat. Create a newsletter that teaches employees about healthy lifestyle practices, including eating habits like smarter food choices and portion control, along with simple exercises that can reduce common health risks like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
3. Implement a rewards program. Start a program that encourages employees to incorporate these adjustments into their lifestyles so they become permanent changes. This can include companywide challenges, setting individual goals and offering incentives such as a day off or cash bonus.
