Have you ever been so frustrated that you questioned yourself and wondered, "Why continue?" You’re not alone. Many of the most successful people in life and business have endured setbacks and failures along their way to success.
Success is created by staying focused, being committed to your plan, and being persistent. So, what is persistence? It is that attitude of being resolved to continue in the face of adversity, frustration, and even perceived defeat.
Norman Vincent Peale said, "If you want to get somewhere you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never give up." That is persistence.
How can you develop an attitude of persistence? Here are some suggestions:
1. Build metrics in your work that will help you recognize progress
2. Take time to honestly and objectively study the progress
3. Replace victim thinking with positive "what if?" thinking
In my executive coaching work, I recommend that to measure employee growth and progress, simple scorecards should be established that reflect performance. What is required of the employee to move the organization toward its most important goals and objectives? Of course, you know that as accountability. But are you holding yourself accountable for progress?
An important part of the mode of operation of successful people is that they regularly review the things that are going right in their life. I recommend a daily end-of-day review to take an objective look at what went right. This will help you build the attitude of persistence.
