Great Supervisors

It has been said that employees join an organization but they leave a supervisor, and you may be nodding in agreement. Supervisors and managers have a tremendous impact on the job satisfaction and productivity of employees. They set the tone and create and maintain the workplace climate. They also have the power to recognize and reward, and to provide feedback and opportunities for learning and development that most employees are seeking.

Despite the acknowledged importance of this responsibility, many supervisors are still uncertain, untrained, or ill-equipped to meet the challenges of their role. Characteristics of great supervisors are:

• They meet the critical needs of the organization, the employees they direct, and the customers they serve.

• They are known for their work ethic and highly ethical behavior; they are therefore trusted by others.

• They practice the Golden Rule, treating people the way most of us want to be treated.

• They maintain a short focus on where they are going and what needs to be done.

• They delegate and empower others to be creative, solve their own problems, and make decisions.

• They are fair, supportive, and concerned for the well-being of others.

• They are committed to life-long learning, growth, and development for themselves and those around them.
