A new employee’s first days on the job provide a host of wonderful "teachable moments." To take full advantage of this special time, it’s important you don’t ignore new-employee orientation.
To start with, concentrate on showing new employees how their work will contribute to the success of the company. Help them gain a complete understanding of your products or services and how your company differs from its competitors. Be sure to introduce newcomers to all their coworkers and school them in the corporate culture. Make sure, for example, they don’t mistake a casual dress code for a casual attitude toward work.
