The Role of Supervisors

It is often said that "Employees join an organization but leave a supervisor." This is no surprise, as it is supervisors and managers who set the tone and create and maintain the everyday workplace climate. They are also the ones who have the power to recognize and reward, provide feedback, and give the opportunities for learning and development that most employees seek.

Despite their importance to an organization, many supervisors are still uncertain, untrained, or ill-equipped to meet the challenges their role demands. When asked, employees cite the following as essential characteristics of great supervisors:

• They meet the critical needs of the organization, the employees they direct, and the customers they serve.

• They are known for their work ethic and highly ethical behavior and are therefore trusted by others.

• They practice the Golden Rule, treating people the way most of us want to be treated.

• They maintain a clear focus on where they are going and what needs to be done.

• They delegate and empower others to be creative, solve their own problems, and make decisions.

• They are fair, supportive, and concerned for the well-being of others.

• They are committed to ongoing learning, growth, and development for themselves and those around them.

Very often there is no position within a company that has greater potential to impact results than that of the supervisor. Think about your company. What are you doing to maintain an outstanding complement of supervisory personnel that will continue to develop, sustain, and retain your best and most productive employees?
