Painting a Downturn

The recession looks different for every community, as we discovered when we went across the country to find out how small businesses were faring in different small towns across America. We were only able to look at five towns, though, and focused solely on the business aspect.

For a broader picture, I’d recommend the blog Portraits of an Economy. The blog calls for readers to write in how the recession is affecting them, their lives, and their towns. Both the similarities and the differences among stories are striking, and help to put a human face to a subject buried under policy, jargon, and politicians.

What reporting do you think we miss when we dive into a community? Is there something more you’re looking for when we, say, cover a town like Newton?
