Barbie is one happy doll. Today a federal jury in California awarded Mattel $40 million in damages, closing the long chapter in its federal copyright lawsuit against, MGA Entertainment, the maker of the popular Bratz line of dolls. While the decision is a considerable amount of cash,it comes to just about two-percent of what Mattel had originally sought: $1 billion in damages. For their part, MGA seemed pleased (or rather relieved) at the outcome.
As Thomas Nolan, attorney for MGA remarked:
“We are thrilled that this jury sent a strong message that they want these companies to compete in the marketplace and not the courtroom…”
