NAMEDEFINITIONSYMPTOMSTREATMENT
CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME Inflammation and swelling of ligaments and tendons in the wrist, which lead to compression of adjacent median nerve. Numbness and pain in wrist, arm, to and hand, which often increases at night. Anti-inflammatories, splints to stabilize the wrist, and in severe cases, surgery to relieve pressure on the nerve.
TENDONITIS AND TENOSYNOVITIS Inflammation of a tendon, the soft tissue that holds muscle to bone (tendonitis), or the membrane that sheaths a tendon (tenosynovitis). Frequently affects shoulder and upper arm. Pain upon movement and, in some cases, swelling. Rest or immobilization, hot or cold compresses, anti-inflammatory medications and controlled exercise, usually under the supervision of a physical therapist.
EPICONDYLITIS Inflammation of the forearm muscles or tendons near their site of origin at the outside of the elbow; also known as "tennis elbow" because it frequently affects tennis players. Severe pain may radiate down the outside of the arm. Anti-inflammatory medications and rest. Even the most mild cases can last for weeks or months.
