IS MY LIFE IN BALANCE? Is your life a rich blend of the personal and the professional? ANALYZE YOUR BEHAVIOR 1. I am usually upbeat and optimistic rather than depressed and gloomy. 2. I have fulfilling and satisfying personal relationships. 3. I spend time and energy maintaining my physical health. 4. I spend time and energy maintaining my spiritual health. 5. I have interests and hobbies that are disconnected from my occupation. 6. When I am with family members, I really am with them, devoting my time and energy to them. 7. When I am on vacation, I am able to disengage from work. 8. I have found a spiritual, humanitarian, or philanthropic cause that both interests and motivates me. 9. My role models are professionals who not only are financially successful but also have satisfying personal lives. 10. I schedule assignments and projects so that my employees are able to balance their work and family. 11. I can think of many things that I'll enjoy doing when I retire or cut back on my work schedule. CHOOSE Get a reality check. Ask friends and loved ones to rate you on the first seven behaviors. Their answers will tell if you need to stop and smell the roses -- and where the flower gardens are located. TRACK Balance does not mean living an "either/or" existence (money and career vs. family and health). Managers who challenge their life-work balance can discover strategies to live "and/also" lives (career and family).
