Conflict

Libya's War Wagons

The military operation that toppled Muammar Qaddafi was really two campaigns, and they couldn’t have been more different. While NATO jets fired laser-guided missiles at Qaddafi’s forces from above, the coalition of militias on the ground relied on decidedly more homemade hardware.

The Libyan army had tanks and armored troop carriers; the rebels used “technicals”—pickup trucks with weaponry welded willy-nilly onto the back like something out of Mad Max.
