Trustbusters Need To Crack Northwest's Fortress (Int'l Edition)

International -- Readers Report

TRUSTBUSTERS NEED TO CRACK NORTHWEST'S FORTRESS (int'l edition)

You were courageous to print "How Northwest gives competition a bad name" (American News, Mar. 16), about how Northwest Airlines Inc. uses allegedly predatory pricing to destroy low-cost airlines that attempt to enter its fortress hub in Detroit. The proposed alliance between Northwest and Continental Airlines Inc. troubles me, since it creates more of a financial powerhouse that could cripple new competitors.

Over the past decade, the U.S. Transportation and Justice Depts. have effectively turned their backs on predatory pricing and other anticompetitive practices in this industry. Furthermore, the large airlines make huge contributions to both political parties and to members of important committees of Congress that oversee the industry.
