Peabody Energy Says Worker Killed in Coal-Mining Accident

November 17, 2012

Peabody Energy Corp. (BTU:US), the largest U.S. coal producer by volume, said a 30-year-old worker died today in a mining accident.

Chad Wayne Meyers, who worked at the company’s Willow Lake Mine, was fatally crushed while operating a machine, St. Louis- based Peabody said in a statement. The accident happened at 3:20 a.m. local time and the cause is still being determined, Peabody said.

Mining operations have been halted while officials from the Mine Safety and Health Administration investigate, said Meg Gallagher, spokeswoman for Peabody in a telephone interview.

The mine is near the town of Equality in Southern Illinois, which is near the borders of Indiana and Kentucky. It employs about 460 workers.

Willow Lake Mine has about 25 million tons of coal reserves and sold 2.2 million tons to Midwest utility customers in 2011, Gallagher said.
