HOME IS WHERE THE CD-ROM SOFTWARE IS

The home software market is hot. One sign: The Software Publishers Assn. attributes a striking 366% jump in first- quarter sales of CD-ROM software to a surge in consumer buying. Not surprisingly, all sorts of software makers are getting into the act. The latest: mainframe software king Computer Associates International Inc. (CA).

The Islandia (N.Y.) software maker is forming a new division called 4Home Productions. In addition to Simply Money, the personal-finance package that launched CA into consumer software last year, the division plans to release nearly a dozen new titles, some on floppy disks and others on CD-ROM, by early next year. The company is striking deals for works including The Ernst & Young Tax Saving Strategies Guide, The Stanley Complete Book of Home Repair and Improvement, and Parents magazine. New titles to debut this fall from CA include Simply Tax ($69.99), Simply House ($59.99), and Simply Kids ($29.99).EDITED BY AMY CORTESE
