Libya Reports Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreaks in Sheep, Cattle

February 01, 2012

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Libya reported multiple outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in sheep and cattle in the northwest of the country, according to a notice to the World Organization for Animal Health.

The infectious livestock disease affected 170 cattle and 3,500 sheep at a total of 13 locations, with the first notified outbreaks starting Dec. 18 in the Misratah district and the town of Zlitan, an alert published online today by the Paris-based animal-health group showed.

Cattle, sheep and goats have been vaccinated in response to the outbreak, according to the notice from Libya’s National Centre of the Animal Health and Breeding Improvement.
