W.Va. Senate authorizes new casino near Va. border

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Senate has authorized the construction of the state's sixth casino.

The casino would be located in Franklin near the Virginia border.

Revenues at the state's five existing casinos are expected to fall by more than $200 million this year. The bill's sponsors said that because of its location, the new casino would not take business from them. It would hope to draw customers primarily from Virginia.

To build the casino, the developers would have to submit plans to build 1,000 home sites and a 150-room hotel. The entire project would have to cost at least $60 million.

The bill passed Wednesday on a 25-8 vote.

The Senate also ordered a study of the state's casinos as they continue to struggle with increased competition from neighboring states.
