...Joblessness Isn't As Scary In Other Countries

Economic Trends

...JOBLESSNESS ISN'T AS SCARY IN OTHER COUNTRIES

Unemployment insurance may be a tattered safety net in the U. S., but it seems resilient in most industrial countries, providing higher benefits relative to wages for a longer period of time. In Canada, for example, more than 80% of the unemployed have been receiving jobless benefits in recent years. Canada's program normally provides up to a year of benefits, and the replacement level of an average production worker's earnings is 60%, compared with 42% to 46% in the U. S. In Germany and Japan, benefits are available for 52 and 40 weeks, respectively, with wage replacement levels running at 63% and 48%.GENE KORETZ
